For Grandma Dora and the Shawangunk Ridge
The Hike
©1994 Joe Irrera
Whisper of wind
Rustling the trees
Sweet mountain laurel is rich in the air
Upward we hike
Skytop we're bound
But her pace leaves us weary and whining
We'll never get there
She says children be glad for this glorious day
Is not this world a most beautiful place
Just up ahead is a heavenly view
Its a good spot to rest I can't wait to share it with you
She finds us a ledge
Close to the clouds
She points out an eagle that floats far below
Whistling through thumbs
With a long blade of grass
This is one of those tricks
She says every young hiker should know
She says children be glad for this glorious day
Is not this world a most beautiful place
Just up ahead is a heavenly view
Its a good spot to rest I can't wait to share it with you
After all of these years I'm still lagging behind
This route that I've chosen is one rugged climb
What I've learned from her life isn't how high you scale
Its the sites and fellow hikers you meet on the trail
Children be glad for this glorious day
Is not this world a most beautiful place
Just up ahead is a heavenly view
Its a good spot to rest I can't wait to share it with you
Just up ahead is a wunderbar view
Its a good spot to rest I can't wait to share it with you
